Russian Missile Strike on Ukrainian Military Facility Claims Dozens of Lives

A Russian attack on a military educational facility in central Ukraine has resulted in the deaths of 41 people and injured more than 180 others, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky.

This strike marks one of the deadliest single assaults since the onset of Moscow's full-scale invasion in February 2022. Zelensky reported that initial findings suggest two ballistic missiles struck the facility in Poltava and a nearby hospital early Tuesday morning.

“We say again and again to everyone in the world who has the power to stop this terror: air defense systems and missiles are needed in Ukraine, not somewhere in a warehouse,” Zelensky said in a statement.

Regarding the attack, Zelensky reiterated his appeal to Ukraine’s Western allies, urging them to provide Kyiv with enhanced air defenses and to lift restrictions on the use of their weapons for strikes within Russia.

In an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour in Kyiv, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba reported that the missile hit its target in a remarkably brief span. Officials stated that many individuals were struck while attempting to reach the bomb shelter.

Ukraine has received a limited number of Patriot air defense systems from the United States and Germany. However, Kyiv has repeatedly stated that this amount is inadequate for providing effective protection.

In June, the Biden administration announced it was prioritizing essential air defense capabilities for Ukraine to "ensure Ukraine’s survival" over other nations. However, Kuleba emphasized on Tuesday that the arrival of new weapons is urgently needed and cannot come soon enough.

Local authorities described Tuesday as a “terrible day for Poltava” and announced a three-day period of mourning. They also stated that no further details about the strike would be disclosed due to “security concerns.”
