In January 2009, he founded USA Financial Consultants Inc., armed with a vision to transform the real estate industry.

Starting from scratch, Darby rented five offices along with a conference room and an 18-cubicle office equipped with a single printer/scanner/fax machine. Determined to make an impact, he invested in radio show ads and even lent his own voice to them. Proudly displaying cubicles filled with college books and sticky notes, Darby would humorously inform clients that his entire team was out to lunch, leaving the impression of a bustling operation.

So, tell us Mr. Darby, how did you get started in the real estate industry?

Long story, but when I was 15 years old, heading south on a freeway to surf with friends, I was in the back seat of a beat-up Toyota Celica and saw a billboard with a well-groomed banker shaking the hand of a humble family. The banker was helping the family. I didn't understand if it was an investment or a mortgage, but I knew right then and there that I wanted to be that guy. Years later, after working at McDonald's, Rite Aid, dishwasher, as a taxi driver for Del Mar Cab, assembler, as a restaurant busboy, waiter, collector, and in several other trades, I saw an opportunity and I jumped on it. The opportunity opened up in 2008, and I founded USA Financial Consultants Inc in January 2009. I started with a vision, so I rented five offices plus a conference room, and an 18-cubicle office with one printer/scanner/fax machine. I purchased radio show ads and voiced them myself. I remember clients coming into my huge empty office (prime location, by the way), and I had sticky notes in every cubicle with college books laying around... I would tell the clients that everyone was out to lunch. I had a $10,000 budget for all of these. $8,000 went to the first month's rent with a deposit. USA Financial made almost a million dollars in the first year. By the second year, we had a fully staffed office and grew year after year until the market shifted in 2015. Luckily, we adapted well and continued thriving even through COVID-19.

Many successful businesses prioritize innovation and creativity, and Mr. Darby is no exception. How does your company, Mr. Darby, foster a culture of innovation? What steps do you, as the leader, take to encourage creative thinking among your team members?

 

My method is simple: keep both ears and an eye out for new stuff and new ideas. I try anything that could work, and my team here knows that. It's hard nowadays with so many new systems and tools coming out. But I know that it's important to keep up to date as much as possible.

With the ongoing pandemic, businesses have had to adapt quickly to changing circumstances.

 

What measures have you taken to ensure the safety of your employees and customers, and how have these measures impacted your operations?

 

The pandemic is gone, and we did our best to accommodate clients and staff with masks and hand sanitizers, but I am glad those days are over.


One of the biggest challenges facing businesses today is keeping up with rapidly evolving technology. 

 

Mr. Darby, what methods do you use to remain knowledgeable about the most recent technological advancements, and how do you ascertain which technologies are worth allocating resources to?


It's a tough call. I recently upgraded from using a $20/month customer relationship management (CRM) system to a $150/month CRM. Was it worth it? Yes, but it's like going from a Toyota to a Mercedes Benz. It feels great, but I am still driving the same distance, just a little faster. Technology is important; luckily, we have embraced several great tools to make our business more efficient and customer-friendly.

 

 

Could you please share some of the noteworthy challenges you have faced in your career journey, and elaborate on the strategies and methods you have employed to surmount them?

Letting go of people is the worst. When the interest rate hike started in 2022, I held on to people I should have let go of then. I paid out of pocket to keep the business afloat for almost an entire year. I tried saving my teammates, but it hurt me. Having the right number of people is crucial, and dealing with a fluctuating market like the real estate industry is tough.

As sustainability continues to gain significance, numerous businesses are actively seeking methods to minimize their environmental footprints. Could you please shed light on the initiatives your company has undertaken to become more environmentally friendly? Additionally, we are also interested in understanding how these efforts have impacted your financial performance.

I donate to several causes that help the environment, and we strive to use environmentally-friendly tools, especially when it comes to recycling.

 

Can you share an experience where you were on the verge of giving up?

As a business owner, I wear too many hats. It is impossible to answer every email and every call. A business is a non-stop machine. As the owner of a small business, I cannot just unplug and take time off. There is no escape, and so at one point, I thought of just throwing it all away and becoming an agent for any company. I could literally work 6 months out of the year, go surfing, snowboarding, travel, hang out with my family, and play sports the other 6. I was contemplating the idea until one morning I realized that what I have built matters, that there is freedom in driving my business. I realized that there are tons of people who depend on my business, from title companies to landscapers and handymen. I can think of at least 50 families to whom we directly help, and there are probably more than that. I have made too many mistakes and I can see a lot of my flaws, the to-do list is huge! But when I see how far we have come, we are alright. We just have to keep trying our best and try to enjoy it while doing it.

Research suggests that successful entrepreneurs often have a unique approach to risk-taking. What's the biggest risk you've taken in your business, and what did you learn from the experience?

I have spent every dime on marketing many times, and I have touched the ground almost in a negative several times, but they have all worked. I am very faithful, and I truly believe that I walk on air in my business as stepping stones are placed right before I step on them. Thank you, Jesus.

 

What's the mission & purpose of your business, & how do you ensure that everyone in your organization is aligned with it? How does your company foster a culture of innovation, & what steps do you take to encourage creative thinking among your team?

The mission and purpose are to always step into our clients' shoes as a starting point and enjoy the day while doing it. Our main purpose is to be a solid tool of trust for the community. We foster a culture of innovation by having open chats, and we each bring new ideas and references almost daily. I have been inspired by so many of my co-workers on many occasions.

What are some of the latest products, services, and programs you are offering in 2024? How are your services helping people achieve success? Have you had any mentors or coaches throughout your career, and how have they helped you achieve your goals?

There are always new programs on the mortgage side of the business. As the broker, I have to be on top of all these new programs, not just for my specific clients but for my loan officers. They need someone who's there for them when they hit a wall or have questions. I like to be there every time. Luckily, I work with an amazing group of experienced loan officers. When I am not there to help, they immediately step in and provide solutions. I am very blessed to work with them. I'm blessed to work with everyone in my company.
